Isaac Barrio - 12/02/2004
On December ninth, Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero takes his first step
toward the big time as he takes on Cesar Figueroa for the NABF Featherweight Title.
The fight is the Co-feature of the Vassiliy Jirov- Michael Moorer heavyweight
bout and can be seen live on Fox Sport's The Best Damn Sports Show Period.
Robert took time out of his busy training schedule to Speak with Hardcore Boxing's Isaac Barrio
Isaac Barrio (IB) : Hey Robert, How are you doing?
Doing Really Good. Feeling Great!
IB: How is training camp going?
Going Great! I have been sparring 40-45 rounds per day. Camp is going well.
You know I have a new Trainer, John Bray, and we are making all the right adjustments.
IB: Tell me about your new trainer John Bray.
John Bray is great! He is a good guy and trainer and was a lot of knowledge.
We have been working on moving and shifting, using the jab to set things up.
Getting on others to open up their defensive for us. John is helping me become
a solid fighter and all around fighter.
IB: Last time I spoke with you, your sparring partners were Diego Corrales
and Alex Arthur. Who have you been sparring with in preparation for this bout?
I have been sparring a lot with Armenian boxer Artyom Simonyan and Jose Celaya.
Today I went ten tough rounds with Israel Vazquez.
IB: Your fight on Dec. 9th is a title bout with Cesar Figuera. Have
you change anything in your preparations since it is a title fight?
I have been putting in lots of good work. John is really showing me the meaning
of Boxing, not just going out and looking for power. I'm learning to fight and
what it takes to be a world class fighter.
IB: Tell me what a title belt would mean to you?
It means a lot. It is my first title fight. I will be ranked in the top ten
in every sanctioning body. It will setup bigger fights with top ten guys. But
I know it is one fight at a time.
IB: Who do you want next? What is the first major title bout you will
go after?
I leave it up to my manager. Which way he wants to go. I will fight anybody.
But it is one fight at a time. I will make my way up and earn my shot.
IB: Tell me about what you think about the following boxers and how
you would rate against them.
Juan Manuel Marquez: Great fighter! Great counter puncher.
He is sharp and always game. A little more experience and I'm there.
Manny Pacquiao: Big puncher. Everyone has seen it with Marquez.
Marquez had never been down before, not even in sparring. And he is a southpaw.
I think I could do well with him. I have fast hands and power. I have the height
(Over a 70 inch reach), the power, chin, and legs.
Ricardo Juarez: Solid fighter. Always relaxed in the ring.
It would be a great fight and we can make it.
Last two together, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales: Really
tough guys. With Marco, you never know if he is will be in good or great shape
but he will be in shape.
I would do good with all these guys. I have confidence in John Bray and we
are contenders.
IB: What would you say are your strengths in the ring:
Having Jesus Christ in my heart. He is number one. Other then that, quick hands
and feet. I'm a southpaw and can punch. I got a great gift from God. My body
and my skills so I will use what I got and give the Glory to God.
IB: Your a big fan of Boxing. Tell me what you think the future of
Boxing holds?
Lots of great fights coming. Guys like Juarez and I are the next generation.
Lots of tough fights to be made, it will be good.
IB: Thank you for your time. Anything else you want to tell your fans?
God Bless them. And this is my year.
Hardcore Boxing would like to thank Robert Guerrero and Mario Serrano.
Good luck and God Bless!
