Boxing_GlovesBag (16K) The Best Damn Boxing Mailbag

Isaac Barrio - 8/21/2005

In this edition of The Best Damn Boxing Mailbag we tackle questions on Winky Wright, Manny Pacquiao, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather, and more.

El C. manguilimotan

Does Floyd Mayweather jr. want to fight miguel cotto this year or zab judah?

Isaac Barrio

I don't see any reason on why he wouldn't fight Cotto or Zab...other than the money being right. Floyd would be the favorite either fight. Cotto is mature beyond his years but he would be greatly mismatched and out gunned against Mayweather at this point. Zab has speed to match Mayweather but he doesn't have the patience and more importantly he does not have the chin. I like Mayweather over Cotto by unanimous decision and Mayweather over Judah by Knockout.

Vivi Carr

I am not a Winky Dinky Dog Wright fan @ all..by far!! I just wanted to say that I think he will never get his big payday due to the fact that he never & will not ever commite to a big punch! That boring jab & great defense will not draw any exciting fights. I think its a bit too soon to call him "pounder 4 pound"! Lets see who is crazy enough to fight him. VC

Isaac Barrio

I don't think we can judge “Pound for Pound” by how popular a fighter is. Winky has world class skills and is a legit lb4lber. That boring jab may not win him a popularity contest but it will get him a lot of W's. As for the “Big” payday...it will come...just look at how much Bernard Hopkins has made in his latter years.

Marchane

Did Hopknins or Taylor have an immediate rematch in there contract?

Isaac Barrio Yes. In fact the are scheduled to rematch on December 3rd of this year. Bernard Hopkins rightfully deserves the rematch.

Tau Gamma Phi

I just coudnt understand why there is mismatch fights buying in the boxing business. This style kills the dream of many boxers to become champion especially in the lighter category.Although we've got no choice but to watch these fabricated fights what we want to see more are fights which are not pre-arranged and bought, we want to see fights between two top fighters, that is according to rank and not according to the marketability of the fight.

Isaac Barrio

I agree 100%. To much crap going on. Do we see NFL teams play Canadian Football Teams? No! Some promoters are too old school and damn stubborn to realize that Pay Per Views have damaged the sport for good. I don't even buy all the crap the promoters put out and I can write it off. I was hoping De La Hoya would bring some freshness into the promotion game but it seems he has caught the Pay Per View bug as well.

Gabriel

Who would u like to win if manny pacquiao and barrera fight again?

Isaac Barrio

Why you got to put me on the spot like that? I like both fighters and think both are great for the sport of Boxing...but if I have to pick I got to go with Barrera.

Aldwin

When will be Manny's next fight? Where will be Manny's next fight?

Isaac Barrio

Manny Pacquiao is fighting. Hector Velazquez at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 10, 2005. Manny should win this fight setting up a rematch with Erik Morales.

Joseph J Ippolito

Aug.18,2005.I just watched two black 6ft 2 fight two 5ft8 one mexican and one white who the hell makes does matches?you should change your title to the worse damn fights made.

Isaac Barrio

LMAO...funny stuff. I suppose you mean the fights that recently ran on the Best Damn Sports Show..? To tell you the truth. I missed them...and it seem like it was a good thing I did.

Klitshcko fan

Everyone talking all this bullshit is going to feel real stupid after they finally fight. Klitschko is going to fuck Rahman up. And I can't wait.

Isaac Barrio

You may be right. If anything Rahman is inconsistent. I give the edge to Klitschko...however..being this is the heavyweight division anything can happen.

Abel Monreal

As a first time visitor to your site, I was pleasantly surprised to read that many of your P4P choices were made with an emphasis on class and professionalism part of your criteria. I applaud all who still believe that boxers should continue to do what they do with an ultimate goal of bringing respect to all fellow boxers and its fans. Thanks again!!!

Isaac Barrio

Thanks for the kind comments.

Three Questions. Why is it assumed that Nady is such a GOOD ref. I think he's lousey. He breaks fighters before they've really clinched. Clinching is a lregitmate move it's tight holding, or holding and hitting which is illegal. He never took a point from Hopkins although he should have. He allowed Hopkins multiple hittings after calling to break with no warning even. I don't think Hopkins played it as if he knew exactly what he was doing. He was frusrtrated because he couldn't really get at Taylor, and was too cautious to take any chance to do so. The main mistake Taylor made in my opinion was to waste so much energy and opportunity in those roundhouse, telgraphed right swingas. If he's straightened them out crisply, I'm sure he'd have derposited Hopkins on his back. As you can see, I don't like Hopkins, not since I saw him turn Antwun Echils around and deliberately floor him flat on his face with a baltant, carefully aimed rasbbit punch. AND AGAIN, he wasn't immediately disqualified and suspended, as he should have been. Youprobably disagree with everything I've said, but......that's life.

And I forgot to mention that I think Hopkins gets a lot of reflected glory from unrthinking nincompoops for his "bravery" in fighting Echols with a dislocated shoulder- brought on by Echols' rebelling against repeated unchecked fouls and hitting and holding that he picked Hopkins up and let him fall to the ground. He didn't "throw" him. Id you ever had a dislocated sshoulder you'd know for sure that Hopkins hadn't got one. he was crafty enough to favour it a little for a couple of rounds but soon enough he was using it the same as before. One doesn't always get a dislocation for falling to the floor in the rope supported corner of a padded ring, in fact almost NEVER. I've had medicsl training and I know. I always thought that Hopkins real skills lay in picking almost moribund opponents, or those who were at their most vulnerable. Just as he thought Taylor was much easier now, with only 24 mostly "set-up" fights rather than if he's had 30-35, and was a hardened, experienced warrior who'd have dismantled Hopkins with little problem.

And what i really meant to tell you, but became sidetracked by my "bete-noir" and a few what i considered to be misconceptions about Mr. Hopkins etc. was that Although it's "posters' laud ESB to the skies, as the BEST Boxing site in the world, one only has to look at both the quality of the writers [for goodness sake some of them refer to themselves as "authors" when, just a few short months ago, they were drooling over their bibs at the thought of having ESB print one of their semi- illiterate platitudinous articles]. That Vile, obscene abuse of the lowest degree is allowed and perhaps even encouraged says it all for me. Your site is a breath of FRESH AIR in contrast to the foulest miasma in Computerland. It's a pleasure to read your writings.

Isaac Barrio

Wow. Nice...long..umm..Well, we don't call him Shady Nady for no reason...so I agree...he isn't the greatest of refs. As for Hopkins, I have said it before and will say it again. Hopkins is the best damn dirty fighter in the game...he puts John Ruiz to shame. Is it a bad thing? I would say no. Hopkins fights a smart fight and most times he doesn't get caught doing what he does best. It is a part of the game...they call it having experience and craftiness.

Thanks for the kind comments on our site!

Newman

I am not sure whether Hopkins or De La Hoya had it planned for the big rematch but noing both thier business savy I am sure they will take full advantage of the situation. Hopkins will come back and destroy Taylor but they will promote it as the fight of the decade and it may help Hopkiins legacy a ton. I only had Taylor winning by one round I thought Hopkins turned it on one round short.

Isaac Barrio

Newman! I agree. Hopkins is not a dumb man. Even though Hopkins won't admit it publicly he knows that he started his assault a bit too late. Look for a complete and total dismantling of Taylor by Hopkins.
