Boxingring (9K) Boxing: If Word is Bond Hatton/Tszyu goes across the Pond

Kimo Morrison - 12/14/2004

Getting a hold of Hatton's publicist Rich Maynard or "pro-guy" as he was referred to me by David Anderson of the UK's Mirror is no easy feat. Those who have been around to shuffle calls though are certain that with a handshake and a verbal agreement the defining fight for Ricky Hatton has finally been set. If all parties agree to continue in the process, the fight should take place some time in March, though no date has been set just yet. The whole world will finally get to see just how tough this guy Hatton really is. Better yet, Frank Warren in a stunning move is rumored to be shelling out over 3 million dollars just to have the fight held in non other than the MEN Arena. This is a huge accomplishment as Tszyu was firm in his statements in Phoenix last month as I heard him from less then ten feet in saying that a fight with Hatton would take place here in the state as he was the Champion and should not have to travel. I guess 3 million is enough to get you packing for a trip to the land without dentists'.

Also huge is the fact that Hatton will have the advantage of a hometown ref most likely or at very least a European ref. This will play an enormous factor in the fight due to the likelihood that Hatton will cut as he does easily. This is not something that has or will hinder him in the fight if or when it happens but will not be subject to early stoppage as the Europeans tend to let the blood flow a little more liberally. I for one think they get better fights across the pond often due to the refs letting the fighters continue. If Lewis/Klitschko would have taken place overseas, Lewis may very well be still making his come back instead of enjoying the fat and happy life retirement is so willing to provide.

My take on this fight in early prediction is the fight of the year for 2005 as I believe Ricky Hatton to be the most underrated fighter in the 140lb division. I have spoken personally with Vince Phillips who says that Tszyu hits harder than any man below super middle weight but thinks that Hatton has a good chance of upsetting him, especially with home field advantage. (Vince Phillips being the only man to defeat Kostya Tszyu) If all is set in stone once the promoters have let it all sink in then gentlemen we are in for one hell of a fight. I may just have to start pricing tickets to London now!
